PVPA is a regional public charter school serving 400 students grades 7-12, from over 60 towns throughout Western Massachusetts. We seek to connect the creative process with critical thinking to inspire a love of learning. As a charter school, the work we do informs educational policy at local, state and national levels.
The mathematics department at PVPA offers courses with content standards that prepare students for college or career readiness. These include year-long courses in 7th and 8th grade mathematics, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Calculus. Additional courses in probability and statistics, 2nd year calculus and semester-long electives are sometimes available given student demand. All of our mathematics classes emphasize problem-solving, sense-making and articulation of mathematical reasoning.
Beginning with the first-year high school class in academic year 2011-2012 we are transitioning from the segregated pathway of Algebra 1 —> Geometry —> Algebra 2 to an integrated pathway consistent with the revised State Mathematics Frameworks (March 2011). Each class in the integrated pathway will include numerical reasoning, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics.
